Cullen B. Slone Sr.

June 22, 1919 - March 5, 2011



SLONE, CULLEN B. SR., 91, of Louisville, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Thompson-Hood Veterans Center.

Cullen was a World War II Army veteran serving under General Patton and spent three years with the post-war occupational forces in Germany (317th Engineers). He also served in post-war Korea. He was a past president and lifetime member of The Society of the 5th Infantry Division and received their Man of the Year award in 2003. After retiring from the Army in 1961 (Ft. Knox), he worked for Naval Ordnance. He was also very active in the Boy Scouts.

He was preceded in death by his father Amos, his mother Dallie, stepmother, Corsie, brother L.D., and sisters Beula May and Geneva.

Cullen is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret "Peggy" Slone; children, Linda Grantz (Charles) and Cullen Slone Jr. (Becky); brothers, Austin and Corbett Slone; sister, Daisy Amburgy; grandsons, Paul (Mandy), Jason (Callie) and Chad Grantz; and great-grandchildren, Kevin, Natalie and Isabella.

Cullen will be dearly missed by his family and friends. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Thompson-Hood Veterans Center for their professional and gentle care.

His funeral service will be held at 10a.m. Wednesday at Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, followed by burial at Bethany Memorial Cemetery. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Thompson-Hood Veterans Center, Wilmore, KY in Cullen's name.
